Library Leadership Competencies in the Digital Age

Digitalisation is a mega-trend that is impacting the library sector, triggering challenges and opportunities that demand new competencies among leaders of academic librarians.

Master of Commerce in Leadership Studies graduate, Mr Mbongiseni Magagula explored library leadership competencies in the digital age from the perspective of library leaders at UKZN. The study, supervised by Professor Macdonald Kanyangale aimed to understand the nature and variety of leadership styles practiced by leaders at UKZN’s libraries and the competencies required to respond to change and provide services in a digital age.

‘I noted a significant gap in leadership and administration within library services, particularly in specialised areas like academic libraries. I aimed to bridge this gap by identifying the expertise required to lead and innovate within the library sector, ensuring that its services remain relevant, dynamic, and responsive to the evolving needs of users,’ said Magagula.

Libraries started transitioning their collections from print to digital formats even before the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the pandemic showed that libraries cannot plan for every contingency, and as such, they must be able to adapt quickly to a changing landscape.

Many of the University’s operations, including the library, were forced to adopt remote working and distance/online education and training during the COVID-19 period. This accelerated the adoption of new technologies, increasing demand for competent leaders.

Magagula identified three leadership competences used by leaders of the academic libraries at UKZN to respond to change and provide services in a digital age, namely, developing people and programmes to achieve change within rules; strategic thinking; and leading teams.

‘The master’s journey is challenging yet immensely rewarding. It not only enhances professional knowledge and skills but also opens doors to new opportunities and perspectives,’ he said.
