Master’s Research Investigates Barriers to Women’s Leadership in STEM Fields

The ongoing discourse on gender equity in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) leadership motivated Master of Commerce (MCom) in Leadership Studies graduate Ms Mpho Moeketsi to contribute new knowledge to the field through her research.

Her study, titled: ‘Advancing Women in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics to Leadership Roles at a South African Research Institute’, was supervised by Dr Simon Taylor.

The study’s key findings highlighted a lack of female role models in STEM, limited exposure to leadership opportunities, challenges with work-life balance and conflicting roles, as well as structural barriers in the career ladder system – all of which hinder women’s progression in STEM fields.

“By highlighting systemic barriers and proposing strategies for advancement, the research has the potential to influence institutional policies and create pathways for more women to assume leadership roles in STEM fields,” said Moeketsi.

Moeketsi said the stories shared by women who participated in her study made her reflect on her own experiences and struggles in a male-dominated environment.

“This reinforced the importance of ensuring diversity, equity, inclusion, and equality – not only in positions but also in remuneration and benefits – especially considering that many women today are primary breadwinners in their families. As a support person, the study also made me realise the critical role I play in ensuring the advancement of these women and research in general. This awareness has strengthened my commitment to creating enabling environments where women can thrive and contribute meaningfully to leadership and innovation,” said Moeketsi.
